Local News

by Councillor Bridget Fishleigh

The Deans Repair Café

Saturday morning 21st March 2026, 10:30h to 12:30h, 29 Chichester Drive West.

Bring along your small electricals, things that need glueing or some TLC, clothes and materials that need stitching. Our team of volunteers will be ready! Local energy advisers will also be there to discuss how you can lower your bills. Please come and catch us there if you have any BHCC related issues you’d like to discuss.

Bin Collection Misses

All very tiresome following vast improvements last year. We are in constant contact with management and have made the feelings of ourselves, and you, known. Extremely unimpressed. Please keep your bins out and save this website so you can report future misses and also check your collection days: https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/rubbish-recycling-and-streets/bins-and-collections/check-your-bin-box-and-caddy-collection-days

Friends of Saltdean’s Oval Park

Oval Park is a much-loved green community hub for Saltdean. With council budgets continuing to be squeezed, we are setting up a working group to discuss what improvements we can make ourselves and to identify any pots of available funding.

In the first instance, we would like to have a walkabout to take a good look and draw up a to-do list. For example, prune the ’new’ trees to the south of the park, remove dead wood, prepare the overgrown grass for wildflower sowing.

If you are interested in joining in then we propose meeting on two dates:
Friday 6 Feb at 10am and Sat 7 Feb at 10am

Please let us know if you can come to either. And, if not, please email us if you would like to be kept in the loop on the ideas and plans as they evolve. We will always need helpers who don’t mind getting their hands dirty!

Potholes

We went out with the inspector this morning to get potholes that weren’t filled last week onto the schedule. Most will be filled in the next week and a few within 28 days. There was only a couple that were deemed too small including one on Lenham but the inspector is coming back again in a few weeks and will re-look.

Saltdean and Rottingdean Youth Club

We're welcoming new members for 2026. If you know a young person in school years 7-9 who'd like to join, contact them via Saltdean Lido.

See Where Heat Escapes from your Home

As part of the Saltdean Decarbonisation Study on heat-loss and insulation, the Saltdean Climate Action Network is looking for six homes in Saltdean to thermal image and see where heat is escaping from.

They need to find a semi-detached house/ bungalow, end-terraced house/ bungalow, mid-terraced house/ bungalow, wemi-detached/ end-terraced flat and mid-terraced flat. Mark’s house has already been surveyed as a pilot and the results are quite interesting.

If you are interested in taking part, it’s free and you will also learn how to patch the gaps then please contact Mark markearthey01@gmail.com, or speak to Mark at Saturday’s Repair Café.

Rottingdean High Street

There is currently a traffic management survey taking place in the area looking at traffic flows. The resultant report might recommend changes eg Steyning going one-way but don’t worry nothing will happen without extensive consultation with locals first.

It will cost £260k to resurface the High Street from the lights to Steyning and refurbish the pavement on the east side, and that money is now in the pot.

However, it’s not an easy or straightforward job as the drain and utility pipes will probably need to be renewed beforehand. We already know that UKPN has electricity capacity issues in Rottingdean.

We also need to find budget to do the stretch around The Green both sides. It would be ridiculous to not do this at the same time. It has taken a really long time to get to this stage with too many highly frustrating stops and starts. The issue, as ever, is £££.

The Deans Beach & Environment Volunteers

They will be litterpicking this Sunday in Ovingdean from 11am-1230pm if you fancy joining in for some feel good fresh air. All equipment provided. They’ll be back in Saltdean on Sunday 5 April and 5 July. Onions anyone?!

Saltdean Food Bank

Supplies are quite low at the moment so if you can spare anything please then it will go to grateful homes. Most people who use the food bank are working zero hours, minimum wage jobs with high rents. We always need pasta, rice, tins of tuna fish, tomatoes, veg, soup, breakfast cereals, UHT milk and biscuits.

That’s it for the time being. So much more we could write about but this news page is long enough already!

Toilets in Saltdean’s Oval Park

A big shout-out to Saltdean resident James Lawrence whose company United Dry Lining recently donated £1000 to Saltdean Swim and Surf Club, and £1500 to Saltdean Food Bank and Saltdean Community Association for its spruce up Longridge Avenue project.

In addition, one of James’ team is currently working for free on the crumbling plaster inside the toilet block in Saltdean Oval Park. Sadly BHCC doesn’t have the money to do this, so we remain very grateful and pleased with the complete refurb of the toilet blocks on the undercliff at both Saltdean and Ovingdean, and on Park Road in Rottingdean (part funded by Rottingdean Parish Council).

Saltdean’s number one volunteer David Wilson will be repainting the walls once they are dry as well as continuing to open them every day before 8am and close at 6pm Fri, Sat and Sunday evenings. Otherwise they’d open later (10am) and close earlier (4pm) when people are already/still out and about.

Local Community

Rottingdean, Saltdean, and nearby neighbourhoods have a vibrant community scene. Groups with many interests like bowling, canoeing, cricket, golf, tennis, surfing, swimming, lifesaving and more, meet weekly all around town.

Then there are organisations like the Lions, Rotary Club, Townswomen's Guild, Free Lifesavers, Saltdean United Football Club, or Scouts to mention a few. The village of Rottingdean is actually older than Brighton, whilst Saltdean grew mainly since the 1930's.

Directions

From Brighton take the A259 towards Newhaven. Bus services 12, 12A, 12X, 13X, 14, 27, and 47 come in from Brighton and Eastbourne.

In Rottingdean the car parking area is just north of the A259, opposite the White Horses Hotel which overlooks the beach. In Saltdean the car parking area is behind the Lido, also just north of the A259.

The Whitecliffs Cafe overlooks Saltdean beach and serves yummy food and drinks. Toilets are available halfway up the cliff ramp on Saltdean Beach, not in the cafe. The Undercliff walk from Saltdean to Brighton is a nice walk in summer. With a little luck you get soaked by a wave.
